Full Circle: Space:1999 Breakaway - The Convention
By Dennis Gonzales, 1999

KFJC The Radio Show - September 4, 1999

At this point, my web business is keeping me so busy, I had no time for vacation and doing a radio show about the Breakaway Convention was one more thing on my plate but I thought it would be fun and good experience for my up coming 2001 exhibit. The show was done on a whim and it was fun for everyone involved. The first person I called was Chris Paulsen from the Breakaway Committee, who a number a months before called me about my exhibit. He told me he would do the radio interview. The next person I wanted to interview was someone from Space:1999. Nick Tate seems the better choice because he lived in San Monica. I called the talent agency he is affiliated with and they return my phone call and told me to fax him about the radio/Internet show. I only had a few days to get him.

The next day, Nick called me at home but I wasn't around to take the call. He left a long but informative message. Even on the phone, he is a funny guy. He noted that he hasn't heard anything about the upcoming convention or no one has called him about it. Although somebody had called him a long time ago but that was it. I admittedly call up Nick at his San Monica home and told him the details of the radio interview and how it will be broadcast through the Internet. I also warned him that people on the Internet expect him to be there because the Breakaway web site is advocating his attendance. Nick said he would love to be there and would let me interview him as well on Saturday morning on Robert Emmett's "Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show." I gave him Chris Paulsens' phone number and the two connected each other for the convention. Nick also told me that he has ISDN setup in his home and he can hook us up at the station if they station has ISDN. Unfortunately, I didn't notify Robert fast enough to hook up Nick for the radio interview. He would have sounded as if he was sitting between us. I also called up Chris about Nick's concern about not being updated about the Breakaway Convention.

Barry Gray's cassette cover The radio show was spontaneous but we pulled it off successfully! Robert was a big Barry Gary fan and I had a cassette tape of piano pieces that was given to my good friend, Mark Watson. As you recall from Mark's story to Europe, Barry was generous to give him a gift for flying all the way from America to meet him. I had to call Nick around 7 AM to remind of the show and his wife answered my call. I told her that Nick is schedule for today's interview at 11 AM. Robert played selections from FANDESON CD's to get the radio/Internet audience warmed up.

Barry Gray's cassette cover Robert called up Chris and put him on hold and then called up Nick but he was talking long distant on another line. So Robert had to get back to Chris about the delay. Once we got Nick on the phone, we both had Chris and Nick live on the air. It was a great 20-minute interview, taking Nick back in time when he first started in show business to how he got involved in Space:1999. I knew then, there is no way I was going to miss this event in Culver City.

Listen to the show on the Radio/Internet Broadcast Shows.

Robert thanked everyone and later told me that was a great interview. He told me to try getting some reports from the convention. I thought interviewing the cast and crew would pretty much give an idea to the listener's the popularity and devotion to Space:1999. I went home, got my ticket from another fan off the Internet and called up the airlines for one round trip airfare to Los Angeles and called the Radisson Hotel for reservations. To my surprise, everything was much cheaper than what was quoted from Breakaway's web site. I also got a good response from the Space:1999 Mailing list as well as the convention when I was there. People as far as New York heard the show on the stations web broadcasting. I also got requests for the Barry Gray tape and hooked the fan to Mark since he was not into the Internet yet.

Culver City or bust.
